Can- can't / could/ couldn't to express ability or inability

 To express ability or inability in the present:

     George CAN'T / CANNOT ski      
but   he CAN swim    




 If we want to express inability  in the Past we use :


COULD and COULDN'T which are the past forms of CAN and CAN'T.
COULD and COULDN'T refers to ability or inability in the past.
