Portuguese athletes Fernando Pimenta and Emanuel Silva won a silver medal in the K2 1,000m canoeing race at the Olympics in Eton, Dorney today (Wednesday), the first medal for Portgual at the London 2012 Olympics.
The Portuguese duo’s time of 3.09,699 minutes was only beaten by the Hungarian pair Rudolf Dombi and Roland Kokeny (3.09,646).
In third position came the German duo Martin Holstein and Andreas Ihle.
Aside from being the first medal for Portugalat this year’s Olympics, it was also the first medal for the country in this sport, on the 13th day of the games.
The duo’s silver medal is the eighth silver ever forPortugalfrom a total of 23 medals won by Portuguese in the history of the games.
Braga-born Emanuel Silva, 26, has been practising canoeing for 14 years and was European champion in the sport last year for the 1,000 metres K4 category, as well as world juniors champion in 2003 for the 500 metres K1 category.
His team mate Fernando Pimenta, 22, has also won a number of competitions in the sport, coming second in the 2010 world championships for the 55 metre K2 category.
