Man leaps from Eiffel Tower on roller skates

Taig Khris set a new Guiness world record on roller skates

Crowds in Paris watched nervously on Saturday as world champion skater Taig Khris set a new Guinness world record by jumping off the Eiffel Tower with roller skates on.

He launched himself from the famous monument before landing on a giant ramp below.

Germany wins Eurovision Song Contest 2010

France beat Turkey and Italy to stage Euro 2016

Uefa president Michel Platini announces France's victory

France have beaten Turkey and Italy for the right to stage the European Championship in 2016.

France previously staged the tournament in 1960 and were hosts again in 1984, winning it with a team captained by Michel Platini, the Uefa president.

The French, hosts and winners of the 1998 World Cup, beat Turkey by just a single vote after Italy were eliminated in the first round of voting.

Euro 2016 will feature 24 countries playing 51 matches over one month.

Twilight series is top winner at National Movie Awards

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson star in the vampire series Twilight

The Twilight series of films has picked up three trophies at the National Movie Awards in London.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon took the prize for best fantasy movie and Robert Pattinson scooped best performance for his role as Edward Cullen in the film.

Eclipse - the next instalment in the vampire saga - was named this year's most anticipated film.

International Missing Children’s Day: 25 May

The International Missing Children’s Day: 25 May is a day where people around the world commemorate the missing children who have found their way home, remember those who have been victims of crime, and continue efforts to find those who are still missing.

The main purpose of International Missing Children's Day is to encourage everyone to think about children who remain missing and to spread a message of hope.
The theme for International Missing Children's Day is parental abduction, an issue that is not only complex but is, unfortunately becoming more common.

The symbol of this day is a beautiful flower called Forget-me-not. Well chosen, wasn't it?

Many Portuguese children are still missing. Many of them are no longer children as they have been missing for many years now but their parents have never given up trying to find them. They still hope one day they will see them again.

It's very sad, don't you think?

A Visit to Belfast

Celebration of creativity at Belfast Children's Festival

BELFAST- The capital city of Northern Ireland

Belfast is not a city short on festivals, but most are designed purely for the grown-ups.

A range of imaginative activities are planned

A festival with a difference gets underway on Friday with 10 days of theatre, music, visual art and activities - all of them for children.
The 13th Belfast Children's Festival is set to celebrate youngsters' creativity with a whole host of low-cost and free events.
Tree chandeliers, giant polka dots and coloured water will transform Waterworks Park this weekend.

Baby rave

The festival continues at venues across Belfast throughout next week with face painting, circus performers, storytelling, art workshops, and plenty of other unusual events to encourage creativity.
At Baby Rave Baby Bollywood, pram parking will be provided and children under-four and their parents will be encouraged to practice Bhangra dancing by a DJ and dance facilitators.

Charlie and Lola will be brought to life with puppets and music

Charlie and Lola, the much-loved stars of the hit BBC TV series also make an appearance, in a stage show with puppets and music.

The festival closes on Sunday 30 May with two full days of children's activities at Festival in a Weekend on Belfast's Waterfront.

Who am I?

My name is Maria Dulce Branquinho and I teach English in a school not far from Lisbon. I 've been teaching for 35 years now. I love teaching and I love my pupils. I'm very concerned about the environmental problems, namely pollution, animals' rights, species in extinction and everything related to our planet's health or the lack of it.

One of the aims of this blog is to give people, especially my pupils the opportunity to know what's going around the world. Of course I only choose news I think can interest them because they´re odd or are, in some extent extraordinary. The other aim is to provide my students with exercises they can try to practice the English language and be able to improve it. I hope you all like my blog. Agatha Christie's short biography

Agatha Christie was born in 1890, the youngest of three children in a conservative, well-to-do family. Her father was called Frederick Miller so she was born as Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller. She was educated at home and studied singing in Paris.

In 1914, at the age of 24, she married Archie Christie, a World War I fighter pilot. While he was off at war, she worked as a nurse. It was while working in a hospital during the war that Christie first came up with the idea of writing a detective novel. Although it was completed in a year, it wasn't published until 1920.

In 1926, Agatha made news herself when she disappeared for a few days after her husband wanted a divorce. She was soon found to be staying in a hotel under an alias. Her disappearance is still a mystery! She and Archibald divorced in 1928.

She fell in love with Max Mallowan, a young archaeologist whom she met on a trip to Mesopotamia and married in 1930 and Agatha Christie became Agatha Christie Mallowan. In 1971 she was awarded the high honor of becoming a Dame of the British Empire.

Agatha Christie ultimately became the acknowledged Queen of the Golden Age. She wrote nearly seventy novels in her career and more than a hundred short stories. Her most famous characters are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Agatha Christie also wrote six romantic novels under the name Mary Westmacott. Several of her works were made into successful feature films, the most notable being Murder on the Orient Express (1974). Agatha's plays have also made her famous and her best known play, The Mousetrap, is most likely the best known mystery play in the world. Her work has been translated into more than a hundred languages. In short, she is the single most popular mystery writer of all time.

Agatha Christie died in 12 January 1976, two years after Max Mallowan died.

As you all know English is considered a world language. It is spoken by millions of people all over the world, not only as an official language but also as a second language. Thousands of millions use English to communicate on the Internet because English is the language of computing too. English is an easy language as it has no accents, verb tenses are simple and adjectives don't change, that is they don't have a plural form. Scientists, politicians, artists or just internet users for fun use English to communicate because it's a language most people understand . So, people from different cultures can keep in touch and exchange ideas, cultural habits, scientific or artistic aspects through English. I hope you follow this blog because it may help you like English better and learn new things every day having fun.
