Cardboard cathedral being built in earthquake hit Christchurch

A cathedral made of cardboard tubes in the city of Christchurch in New Zealand is due to be completed in April next year, 132 years after the consecration of the original stone version.

The gothic church was destroyed on February 22 last year during a devastating earthquake, in which nearly 200 people were killed.

The new cathedral's Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban, is a pioneer in "emergency architecture". He started working with the UN in the mid-1990s to erect temporary shelters for refugees in Africa and has since helped with humanitarian relief efforts from Turkey to his native Japan.
